Why support a free, open-source project?
Tracelet was born out of a simple frustration: background geolocation is incredibly hard, and the few reliable solutions on the market are expensive, closed-source SaaS products that lock developers into recurring monthly fees. I believed there had to be a better way—a robust, production-grade engine that any developer could use to build their ideas without worrying about astronomical infrastructure costs.
That is why I built Tracelet. My vision was to democratize background geolocation, completely eliminating the need for paid tracking services, and saving other developers tons of working time and frustration.
The Reality of Maintenance
Tracelet is currently developed and maintained by a solo developer, pouring countless nights and weekends into making this the absolute best location engine for Flutter.
Developing a cross-platform background engine isn’t just about writing code once. It requires constant adaptation:
- Android and iOS are constantly changing their background execution limits.
- OEMs (Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei) constantly introduce new aggressive battery-saving features that break background execution.
- Flutter and Dart updates require continuous SDK alignment.
If development on Tracelet slows down or stops, the engine will eventually succumb to these aggressive OS updates, and the community will lose this free resource. I use AI tools, extensive research, and the majority of my free time to stay ahead of these platform changes so you don’t have to.

I will never lock Tracelet’s core features behind a paywall, and I will never beg for donations. This is a labor of love for the developer community.
